2 days in the Vercors, caves and dizzying roads

A natural fortress between Grenoble and the Drôme, the Vercors is famous for its roads cut into the cliffs, its caves and the history of its Resistance fighters. Two days to see its finest sites.

Our day-by-day itinerary

The map shows the numbered stops in visiting order, with one colour per day. The line follows the roads where available; otherwise it joins the stops as the crow flies. Distances and times are approximate (by car, without traffic).

Day 1 — Caves de Choranche to Gorges de la Bourne (Les Grands Goulets)

The Choranche cave and its straw stalactites, the village of Pont-en-Royans and its houses hanging above the Bourne, then the Bourne gorges and the Grands Goulets.

When to go

From May to October, when the roads and caves are open. Autumn colours the forests. In winter, the Vercors is a cross-country skiing destination, but some roads may be closed.

Getting around

A car is essential. The Vercors roads are narrow, with tunnels and overhanging sections: drive carefully. Grenoble and Valence are the nearest railway stations.

Our tips

  • Check that roads are open after heavy rain.
  • Bring a warm layer for the caves.
  • The Resistance Memorial stands at altitude: bring a jacket.
