Cirque de Navacelle
Like other famous sites of the Grands Causses, the Cirque de Navacelles is visited every year by millions of tourists who come to admire the cut of the Vis canyon through the limestones and dolomites of the Causse de Blandas.
At the bottom of the canyon, 300 metres below the Causse, the Vis tumbles in cascades at Navacelles. The village clings to the rocks, following a flat-bottomed loop of cultivated fields that surround a small relief of limestone. The whole is overlooked by slopes covered with a few active scree slopes, forming a great amphitheatre whose limestone bars would form the tiers. This "cirque" is an old course of the Vis and thus has nothing in common with other cirques of the region, such as that of Mourèze or the Bout du Monde near Lodève, a simple reculée of the limestone and dolomite edge of the Causse du Larzac under the effects of erosion.
