Les Rochers de Sauve

Gard, Occitanie

The Mer des Rochers overlooks the medieval town of Sauve, in the Gard, on the heights of the Coutach massif. It is a chaos of limestone rocks that erosion has sculpted into astonishing shapes, in the middle of a holm-oak garrigue. Limestone is a highly fissured rock: rainwater seeps into it, dissolves the stone and gradually widens the cracks into crevasses. The plateau was once a seabed.

Paths criss-cross the chaos, with notably a sundial built on a small promontory. The edges of the nearby aven are not secured, which calls for caution. Nearby remain the ruins of the castle of Roquevaire, including a restored tall tower. The site has free access, with a picnic area and a themed trail; routes may be closed in periods of fire risk.
