Gouffre des Espélugues
The Espélugues cavity is south-east of Dions at the entrance of the Gardon gorges. This collapse chasm, with an impressive opening (150 x 93 m) and 70 metres deep, probably formed "a window" on an old underground diversion of the Gardon (which still dries up downstream of Dions). But the wide, short gallery that you enter at the bottom and that follows a small fault leads nowhere today. On the surface, on the plateau at 120 metres' altitude, quartz gravels no doubt represent a spread left by the Gardon in Villafranchian times.
