Uzès

Gard, Occitanie

Uzès bears the title of "first duchy of France", granted in 1565 by Charles IX: it placed the duke at the head of the nobility in the order of precedence and was attached to his person rather than his lands. The ducal castle was restored from 1951 by the Marchioness of Crussol. Next to Saint-Théodorit cathedral, damaged during the Wars of Religion and rebuilt in the mid-seventeenth century, stands the Fenestrelle tower, or Campanile, listed as a historic monument as early as 1862.

The Place aux Herbes, shaded and lined with arcaded houses, hosts a renowned market on Saturdays. Silk made the town prosperous in the eighteenth century, and the last spinning mill closed in 1936. A liquorice factory, the former Zan and now run by Haribo, is linked to the Musée du Bonbon. The spring of the Eure fountain fed the Roman aqueduct to Nîmes, of which the Pont du Gard is the best-known section.
