Nîmes

Gard, Occitanie

Heir to a rich Roman city whose ancient heritage it has preserved among the best in the world, Nîmes is organised around its arena and the Maison Carrée, but also holds for visitors the more discreet charm of its Jardins de la Fontaine, laid out in the eighteenth century on the site of an ancient sanctuary dedicated to the Nemausus spring that gave the town its name. This French-style park, one of the first public gardens in Europe, mixes balustraded basins, statues and ancient remains of the Temple of Diana at the foot of Mont Cavalier, crowned by the Tour Magne. The town also draws its identity from the fabric that bears its name, "bleu de Nîmes" or denim, exported from the nineteenth century to American factories, while bullfighting traditions and corridas in the arena perpetuate a strong link with Camargue and Spanish culture.
