Arènes de Nîmes
The Arènes de Nîmes are a Roman amphitheatre built at the end of the first century, around 90 AD, to host gladiator fights and wild-beast hunts before more than 20,000 spectators seated according to social rank. 133 m long by 101 m wide and 21 m high, they are considered the best-preserved Roman amphitheatre in the world. Turned into a fortress in the Middle Ages then occupied by dwellings until the nineteenth century, they regained their ancient appearance after the demolition of the interior buildings in 1809.
