Château de Beaucaire

Gard, Occitanie

The château de Beaucaire is a former fortress standing on the banks of the Rhône, in the commune of Beaucaire, in the Gard. It faces the château de Tarascon, on the other bank of the river. One of the largest fortresses in France, it was rebuilt under Saint Louis, after the annexation of Languedoc to the royal domain in 1229, to watch over the Rhône, then the border with Provence.

Destroyed on Richelieu's orders, the fortress is today in ruins, but laid out for visiting. Through the fortified gate, you glimpse the triangular tower, with the chapel and the round tower beside it. A garden occupies the interior, and there you find the Auguste Jacquet museum.
