Musée et sites de Saint-Romain-en-Gal- Vienne

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Saint-Romain-en-Gal museum, in the Rhône département, faces Vienne, on the other bank of the river. It overlooks an archaeological site in the heart of the ancient Roman city of Vienna, discovered in 1967 during the construction of a school. The museum, the work of the architects Philippe Chaix and Jean-Paul Morel, opened in 1996 and is run by the Rhône département.

Its collections gather objects of Roman and Gallo-Roman archaeology: mosaics, ceramics, models and reconstructions of life in Vienna. On the site, below, you discover notably the Baths of the Wrestlers and the House of the Ocean.

Excavations continue to bring discoveries: in summer 2025, excavations revealed the remains of a large circular Roman mausoleum about 15 m in diameter, dated about fifty years after the start of our era and inspired by the mausoleum of Augustus in Rome. The museum also regularly presents temporary exhibitions.
