Musée gallo-romain de Fourvière

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The museum of Gallo-Roman civilisation is in Lyon, near the Roman theatres, on the Fourvière hill, once in the heart of the Roman city of Lugdunum. It is managed and operated by the Rhône Département services, jointly with the archaeological museum of Saint-Romain-en-Gal. The museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions. Models reconstruct the main monuments: Capitoline temple, the ancient theatre of Fourvière and the Odeon. The hippodrome is evoked by a mosaic showing in detail the chariot races that took place there. This mosaic was discovered in 1806 in the Ainay district and is one of the very rare depictions of races known from Antiquity. Archaeologists suppose that Lugdunum had a circus with wooden stands and tribunes. The museum also contains objects whose origin predates the Roman occupation, more particularly of the Celtic period.
