Gordes

Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

This village perched on a promontory seems to stand guard over the Apt valley and the Cavaillon plain. Gordes is overlooked by its powerful castle and its massive church, nevertheless lightened by a campanile. With its pretty calades (lanes) and its rows of tall blond-stone houses, it is one of the most admirable in France.

A link between the centuries, the castle of Gordes is an extraordinary architectural hybrid, made of a feudal fortress and a Renaissance manor, all converted into a museum of modern art. The meeting of mullioned windows, pepper-pot towers and works by Vasarely, who restored the place, is prodigious.
