Château de Quéribus

Aude, Occitanie

Quéribus castle is a former "Cathar" fortress, now in ruins, that stands in the commune of Cucugnan, in the Aude, a Corbières village immortalised by Alphonse Daudet. Perched on a narrow rocky peak, it emerges at 728 metres' altitude and offers a superb panorama. Its existence probably goes back to the tenth century, and it is mentioned in 1020.

The castle was the last bastion of Cathar resistance to fall to the crusaders, in 1255. It was then integrated into the crown's military system to defend France's border against Aragon, then lost its role after the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659. It is visited on foot, with a steep climb.
