Château de Padern

Aude, Occitanie

Clinging to a rocky peak, the ruins of the castle of Padern, in the Aude, overlook the village and watch over the Verdouble and Torgan valleys. In 899 King Charles the Simple gave Padern to the Abbey of Lagrasse.

Nothing remains of the medieval castle, which sheltered Occitan knights rebelling against the King of France, such as Chabert de Barbaira and Guillaume de Peyrepertuse during their flight. It was one more element of protection and surveillance in this frontier territory. The present building dates from the 17th century, built by the lord Pierre de Vic, who bought it at that time. It is easily reached by a small path winding up from the south.
