Château d'Aguilar

Aude, Occitanie

The ruins of Aguilar castle crown a rocky peak. The oldest part is the polygonal upper enclosure, pointed on the attack side (twelfth century). Built at a strategic point, on a hill overlooking the Tuchan plain, it watches over access to the Corbières. Mentioned in 1020, Aguilar castle was then a possession of the count of Fonollède. In the second half of the twelfth century, it passed to the Termes family. The fortress is built, at 321 metres' altitude, on top of a rounded height, easy to approach from all sides. The castle lost all strategic interest when the border was pushed south of Roussillon by the Treaty of the Pyrenees. After several Spanish attacks in the fourteenth century, it was definitively abandoned in 1569.
