Château de Josselin

Morbihan, Bretagne

The vast fortress of Josselin, built in the eleventh century, was rebuilt by Olivier de Clisson in the fourteenth century. In the late fifteenth century, Alain de Rohan and Jean II worked on the embellishment of their castle. We owe them the Flamboyant-style façade, a foreshadowing of the Breton Renaissance, which contrasts with the defensive towers and walls. The interior, restored in the nineteenth century, houses rare pieces of furniture. The castle has belonged since the beginning to the family of the dukes of Rohan. For a good view of the castle, stand on the Sainte-Croix bridge that spans the Oust. The sheer drop of the walls is striking. The building appears here in its fortress aspect, with high towers, curtain walls and machicolations.
