Château de Comper

Morbihan, Bretagne

A former fortress of the lords of Montfort, the Château de Comper, in the Morbihan, was besieged by Du Guesclin in 1370 and rebuilt in 1375 by Raoul de Montfort. After several restorations it remains a very appealing place, much of whose charm comes from its setting of woods and ponds.

Rich in legends and a key site of Brocéliande, Comper is said to have been the home of Dyonas, father of the fairy Viviane, with whom the enchanter Merlin fell in love. It was in the great lake of Comper that Viviane is said to have raised Lancelot, hence his name, Lancelot du Lac.
