Bourges
Bourges, the former Avaricum, was the capital of the Gaulish Bituriges Cubi people. Under the Ancien Régime, it was the capital of the Berry, corresponding roughly to the present départements of the Cher and the Indre. Today, with about 64,000 inhabitants, it is the most populous commune in the Cher.
The Gothic cathedral of Saint-Étienne has been inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage since 1992. Nearby are the Palais Jacques-Cœur, home of Charles VII's silversmith, and the Hôtel Lallemant, an example of Renaissance architecture, among the other monuments of the old centre. The marshes district of Bourges, formed by the marshes of the Yèvre and the Voiselle, is divided into plots and is now used as vegetable gardens and leisure areas, which you can discover on foot or by boat.
