Cathédrale de Bourges
Saint-Étienne cathedral in Bourges is a Catholic cathedral built between the late twelfth and late thirteenth centuries. Dedicated to Saint Stephen, the first martyr, it is the seat of the archdiocese of Bourges, which covers the Cher and the Indre. It is admirable for its harmonious proportions and the unity of its design.
Its tympanum, sculptures and stained glass are particularly remarkable. It stands out from the other great cathedrals of its time by an entirely new pursuit of unified interior space. Beyond its architectural beauty, it bears witness to the power of Christianity in medieval France. Inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage, it is one of the great masterpieces of Gothic art.
