Palais Rohan
The Palais Rohan, on Place du Château in Strasbourg, next to the cathedral, was built between 1732 and 1742 for Cardinal Armand-Gaston de Rohan-Soubise, prince-bishop of Strasbourg. Listed as a historic monument since 1920, it now houses three municipal museums.
In the basement, the archaeological museum retraces the history of the region from prehistory to the Merovingian period, through the Bronze and Iron Ages and the Gallo-Roman period. On the ground floor, the decorative arts museum presents Strasbourg applied arts from 1681 to the mid-nineteenth century: Hannong ceramics, furniture, silverwork, clockmaking, sculpture, as well as the cardinals' former apartments. On the upper floors, the fine arts museum offers a panorama of European painting from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century, with a fine set of still lifes.
These museums have been set in the palace since the late nineteenth century (1889) for fine arts and archaeology, 1918 for decorative arts.
