Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est

The Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMCS) was inaugurated by Catherine Trautmann, then Minister of Culture and former mayor of Strasbourg, in December 1998. It was built, by the architect Adrien Fainsilber, on the left bank of the Ill, facing the seat of the Bas-Rhin departmental council and close to the Vauban dam and the picturesque Petite France district. Place Jean-Arp, onto which the museum opens, also hosts on its north side the École nationale d'administration, housed in a former convent that became the Sainte-Marguerite women's prison of Strasbourg. Since March 2008, Estelle Pietrzyk, formerly in charge of missions at the Picasso museum, the Rodin museum's drawings cabinet and the creation of the Soulages museum in Rodez, has been the curator in charge of the museum.
