Lac de Melo

Haute-Corse, Corse

Lac de Melo is a glacial lake of 6.5 hectares, at 1,710 metres' altitude in the Restonica valley, about ten kilometres from Corte, in Haute-Corse. It reaches about 20 metres' depth and stays frozen half the year. It is part of the Monte Rotondo nature reserve.

The Restonica rises there, before joining the Tavignano. In 2018, researchers discovered there a previously unknown bacterium, Polynucleobacter meluiroseus, named after the lake. It is a stage on the way to Lac de Capitello, further up at 1,930 metres, about an hour and a half's walk further. Since the damage caused by the storms of November 2023, the hike's starting point has been moved: it is best to find out before setting off.
