Lac de Capitello

Haute-Corse, Corse

Lac de Capitello is a lake of glacial origin in Haute-Corse, in the upper Restonica valley, about ten kilometres from Corte. It lies at 1,930 metres' altitude, covers about 5.5 hectares and reaches 42 metres' depth, which makes it the deepest of the Corsican mountain lakes. It is frozen more than eight months a year.

Its name comes from the Punta Capitello, a summit of 2,245 metres that dominates the landscape. The lake is in the Monte Rotondo nature reserve and has been a listed site since 1966. Its waters feed the Restonica, a tributary of the Tavignano. The area shelters golden eagles and bearded vultures. It is reached on foot after Lac de Melo, below, by a path of about an hour and a half further.
