Lac de la Muzelle

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Lac de la Muzelle is a glacial lake at 2,105 metres' altitude in the Vénéon valley, within the Écrins massif, at the foot of the Roche de la Muzelle. It measures about 405 metres long by 365 wide, for an area of 9 hectares and a maximum depth of 18 metres. The site has been protected since 1 March 1941.

To reach it, you start from the Bourg d'Arud, in the commune of Venosc, and should allow about 1,200 metres of climbing. The Muzelle refuge stands on the lake shore and serves as a base for hikers, who can spend the night there to enjoy the site in peace.

Since 2020, social media have made visitor numbers explode: in summer, an average of 140 tents are set up by the water, and up to 200 at peak times. This crowding suggests coming outside the busiest days, respecting the rules of the place and booking the refuge in advance. Like any high-mountain hike, the outing requires good fitness and an eye on the weather.
