Le Lac Achard

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Lac Achard is a mountain lake of the Belledonne massif, in Isère, at 1,917 metres' altitude, near the Chamrousse resort. It is of glacial origin and occupies the bottom of a cirque. Elongated on a north-south axis, it is about 255 metres long by 100 wide, for 1.28 hectares, and consists of two basins. It feeds the Arselle stream, which joins the Romanche.

The surrounding landscape is made of high-altitude meadows, scattered conifers and wetlands, whose scenic qualities have justified environmental protection. The lake stays frozen and snow-covered in winter, which makes it less visible in that season.

It is the goal of a popular and rather easy walk from Chamrousse, in summer as in winter. Several routes lead there through woods, where you can pick bilberries and raspberries in summer, and the paths are sometimes stony: good shoes are essential.
