Grand Aquarium de Saint-Malo

Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne

The Grand Aquarium of Saint-Malo, opened in 1996, presents a world tour of the oceans over about 4,000 m². It has 46 tanks containing a total of some 2.5 million litres of water, home to about 10,000 animals belonging to a hundred families and nearly 600 species.

The centrepiece is the ring tank, a ring of about 600,000 litres that lets you watch blacktip sharks and loggerhead turtles through 360 degrees, one of the turtles being more than 30 years old. The other attraction is the Nautibus, a Jules Verne-themed submarine that dives among thousands of fish in a tank of 1,500,000 litres. A touch tank also lets you touch rays and fish of the North Atlantic.

The aquarium is located south of Saint-Malo, in the Naye area, and fits well into a day devoted to the corsair city. Opening hours, prices and access conditions to the Nautibus should be checked with the official website.
