Tour Solidor

Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne

This fortified keep consists of an old gatehouse surrounded by three adjoining cylindrical towers. Built from 1369 to 1382 on the orders of Duke John IV of Brittany, the tower became a prison during the Revolution. It now houses the International Museum of Cape Horn Long-Distance Sailing, gathering many souvenirs made by sailors or brought back from distant ports, models, sea charts and navigation instruments. At the mouth of the Rance, in the former commune of Saint-Servan, the building also offers a magnificent panorama from the wall-walk at the top. Not to miss: the view over the Rance estuary from the top, and the model of the "Victoria", the first ship to sail round the globe in the sixteenth century.
