Petit Bé

Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne

The Petit Bé is a seventeenth-century fort on the island of the same name, a few hundred metres from the ramparts of Saint-Malo and a few dozen metres from the Grand Bé. It was part of a defensive belt designed by Vauban, with Fort National, to protect the town from English or Dutch squadrons.

It was built under the direction of Garangeau. It could hold a garrison of 160 men during sieges and was armed with 19 cannons and two mortars. It consists of a vast platform and a three-storey building. Reachable on foot at low tide from the Plage de l'Éventail, it offers a fine view of Saint-Malo.
