Gouffre Cerisier et Gorges d'Héric
The Héric gorges are near Mons-la-Trivalle, in the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park, within the Caroux-Espinouse massif. The Héric torrent has carved these deep gorges that reveal the root of the ancient Hercynian chain: gneiss, migmatites and granites at the base, schists and mica schists higher up. The site is on the list of listed sites.
A path opened in 1931 lets you go up the gorges. You pass notably the Vialais bridge and the Passerelle des Soupirs, while the torrent forms a succession of pools and waterfalls, including the Gouffre du Cerisier, a natural basin where you can cool off. The walls and rocky needles tower over the gorge-bottom vegetation. The massif is also a climbing area, and the upper part of the course is popular with canyoning enthusiasts.
