Le Pont du Diable à Olargues

Hérault, Occitanie

The Devil's Bridge of Olargues crosses the Jaur below the village, in the Haut-Languedoc, in the Hérault. It is a Romanesque dressed-stone bridge, built in the twelfth century according to sources, which differ on the precise date, between around 1150 and the start of the following century. It has three arches, the main one of which measures more than 32 metres' span, and it has been listed as a historic monument since 1916. It was remodelled in 1758.

Closed to car traffic, it is reserved for pedestrians and suits a walk well, with a view over the river and the perched village of Olargues.

Legend tells that the devil agreed to guarantee the bridge's solidity in exchange for the soul of the first to cross it; the villagers are said to have sent a black cat.
