Château de Lourmarin

Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

The castle was listed as a historic monument in 1973. In an exceptional setting facing the village, the château de Lourmarin, the first Renaissance castle in Provence, has two parts: the Old Castle, built in the late fifteenth century by Foulques d'Agoult, whose "great elegance" shows in its Italian-style loggia, and the sixteenth-century Renaissance wing, entirely furnished and containing collections from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century. It is a place that lives all year round. In summer, it becomes an artists' residence (painters, sculptors, musicians...). It is nicknamed the Little Villa Medici of Provence. Also a cultural centre, you can come and hear superb concerts in summer on the castle terraces (jazz, theatre, classical...). The rest of the year, the Association des Amis de Lourmarin organises lectures on varied themes (truffle, lavender, Einstein...).
