Château de Murs

Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

The oldest remains of the château de Murs date from the twelfth century and were built by the Agoult family, lords of the land of Sault since 1004. It was then less a castle than a fortified barracks serving to house soldiers and the "bayle" representing the lord in his absence. Only ramparts and a tower remain of this construction, in the western part of the present castle. Between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the central part of the castle was built, notably the keep with its Gothic chapel and justice hall. A Renaissance-style house, now collapsed, was built beside the restored Maison Crillon. This "lord's residence", outside the castle enclosure, welcomed the lord's guests and relatives. That is how Crillon was born in 1543, his mother, sister-in-law of the lord of Murs, being passing through the castle.
