Château de Thouzon

Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

The Château de Thouzon, at Le Thor in the Vaucluse, is a ruined monastery at the top of the Thouzon hill. Built in the 11th century, it housed a Benedictine community, who left at the end of the 17th century; later owners let the buildings decay.

The hill was grazing land for flocks of sheep, and its fortress was a refuge for the people of Le Thor in troubled times. It was nevertheless taken by the armed bands of the Viscount of Turenne in the 14th century and by the fearsome Baron des Adrets during the Wars of Religion.
