Château d'Ansouis
First a fortress, residence since the twelfth century of the Dukes of Sabran de Pontevès, the château d'Ansouis has over the centuries become one of the most splendid inhabited homes in Provence: a magnificent collection of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century furniture, fine tapestries, vast gardens and terraces surrounding the castle in a green setting give the whole site much charm.
Founded in the tenth century, the château d'Ansouis is one of the oldest fortresses in Provence. It overlooks the village of Ansouis, in the Vaucluse, and made it possible to control the Aigues valley, which gives access to the west to the Rhône valley, at Orange, and to the south to the sea, via Aix-en-Provence.
