Château de Fougères

Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne

Fortified from the eleventh century, the castle was originally built on a rocky promontory emerging from a marsh. The château de Fougères, one of the main keys of the Duchy of Brittany, was besieged, ruined and rebuilt many times between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries. It therefore offers a complete panorama of military architecture, from the Romanesque period to the constructions of triumphant artillery. To this architectural interest are added the wealth of historical and warlike memories, and the spectacular character due to the enormity of the work.
