The most beautiful medieval fortresses in France

Massive keeps, crenellated curtain walls and double enclosures: before being pleasure residences, fortified castles were first of all war machines, designed to withstand sieges.

This selection honours medieval military architecture at its most spectacular, from the largest fortress in Europe at Sedan to the ramparts of the city of Carcassonne, via the masterpieces of Viollet-le-Duc.

Places that tell as much about the history of sieges and feudal wars as about the later story of the romantic restoration of medieval heritage in the nineteenth century.
