Château de Landal

Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne

The château de Landal, in one of the most picturesque sites of the département, has existed since the twelfth century. The fortress whose imposing masses survive today dates essentially from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. It had six strong towers of which three are still standing. The great lodging, partly rebuilt in the nineteenth century, offers one of the great successes of the neo-Gothic style. Besieged and taken from the English during the Hundred Years' War (1354) by the Marshal of France Arnoul d'Audrehem, the château was burned by the Leaguers at the end of the sixteenth century, then burned again by an English expeditionary corps in 1758. The wild and steep site that surrounds the château and the pond deserves long walks.
