Château du Bois-Cornillé

Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne

The Le Cardinal de Kernier family, who came to the Vitré area through marriage, decided in the mid-19th century to remodel the Château du Bois-Cornillé, in the Ille-et-Vilaine. First, a monumental Neo-Renaissance wooden staircase was installed in the old building.

At the end of the century the Mellet architects were commissioned to rebuild it entirely in the Neo-Gothic style, making it much more imposing than the 17th- and 18th-century house preserved behind the new façades. The old 15th-century stair turret was kept to preserve the memory of Pierre Landais, who owned Le Bois-Cornillé at that time.
