Château de Baulx

Hérault, Occitanie

Perched on its rocky peak, the château de Baulx overlooks the village. A simple watchtower in the twelfth century, protecting the barony of Pégairolles, the whole underwent various alterations over the centuries. In the nineteenth century it was described as in ruins. Left abandoned, the monument, covered with vegetation and partly demolished, was bequeathed to the commune in 1987. From then the safeguarding project was born; archive research and excavation campaigns were carried out under the control of the historic monuments. The aim was not to rebuild to a specific period, but to show visitors the transformations through periods of insecurity and calm. To save the feudal castle from ruin, the emblem of a whole valley, the Association des Compagnons de Tras Castel has for more than 10 years been probing, listening, looking at the stones. It is this adventure they invite you to share by showing you, with before-and-after photos, the fabulous work undertaken. Enjoy your visit, follow the guide.
