Château d'Assas

Hérault, Occitanie

Assas first had a feudal castle, probably built in the 10th or 11th century, some parts of which can still be seen (towers with sloping bases, rampart, keep). The Saint-Martial church was the castle chapel of this medieval building.

The present château is much more recent. Built in the 18th century by the architect Giral (who also designed the Château de la Mogère and part of the Promenade du Peyrou), it is one of the 'folies', the country houses built around Montpellier at that time. Very restrained in style, the château contains elements from the demolished Château de la Mosson, including ironwork and a large crystal chandelier. There are also Renaissance-period orangeries and a French formal garden.

Today the château hosts cultural events and can be visited by appointment only.
