Château de Bocaud
The present Château de Bocaud, in the Hérault, was built in 1618 and remodelled in the 18th and 19th centuries. The west wing houses a suite of rooms with 17th-century joinery. Around 1760 a salon was decorated with gypsum plasterwork depicting fables. The most important décor is Napoleonic in inspiration.
The garden, created in 1712, has a walled park, terraces, parterres with small groves, a kitchen garden, an orchard, woods and a tree-lined avenue leading to the grotto. The present layout follows the characteristic early 18th-century pattern, with vases, urns, stone baskets, statues and sphinxes. The nymphaeum grotto is exceptional for its decoration of shells and rockwork. The romantic landscaped park, with a lake and an island, dates from the 19th century.
