Château de Castries

Hérault, Occitanie

Built on the site of a Gothic castle of which nothing remains, from the year 1565, this castle nicknamed "the Versailles of Languedoc" is a Renaissance masterpiece. A large part of the original building still remains today, notably a vast hall 32 m long, called the Hall of the Estates General of Languedoc. The château is surrounded by French-style gardens that are the work of the royal gardener Le Nôtre. The château was supplied with water via the Castries aqueduct, specially designed for this purpose by Pierre-Paul Riquet. Bought back by René de Castries in 1935, the château has since 1985 been the property of the Académie française, following the donation of the duke of Castries.
