Château de Flaugergues

Hérault, Occitanie

Built at the end of the seventeenth century, Flaugergues is one of those dwellings called "follies" built in the Montpellier countryside. "Houses in the foliage", they are the work of a new aristocracy enriched in the king's service. Set in the middle of the rural estate, they are surrounded by magnificent gardens. They thus became the summer residences of Montpellier notables in the eighteenth century. The terrace in front of the château has a classical, simple, plain look and leaves the decoration to the architecture and sculptures, among which two stone statues by Guyon (1728), Peace and Abundance, on either side of the steps. The park is south-west of the château. It is an English-style garden, a botanical garden created in 1850 with the triple concern of floral decoration, exoticism and priority to large trees, extending over three hectares. The vines, once around the château, are now mostly planted to the east.
