Carrières de Lumières
The Carrières de Lumières are former limestone quarries hollowed out in the heart of the Alpilles, on the Maillane road, at Les Baux-de-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône). Their high walls of white stone serve as a screen for immersive multimedia shows, which project thousands of moving images onto the walls, pillars and floor, accompanied by a sound creation.
Each year, a major digital exhibition devoted to an artist or a movement in art history is presented, with a short complementary programme. In 2026, the programme is devoted to "Picasso, Art in Motion", which looks back at the career of the co-founder of Cubism through more than 450 images of works, photographs and archives, and to "Frida Kahlo, Straight from the Heart", devoted to the Mexican artist. A summer show on the underwater world, "Océan", has also been announced.
Special evenings are organised occasionally. The site is visited underground, where the temperature is cooler than outside, suiting families as well as lovers of art, images and music.
