Museon Arlaten
The Museon Arlaten, also called the Museum of Provence, is an ethnography museum in the centre of Arles, in the former Laval-Castellane townhouse, rue de la République. Founded in 1899 by Frédéric Mistral, it is devoted to the arts, history and traditions of Provence and the Arles region.
Closed for major renovation work, it reopened on 19 May 2021 after a long interruption, thanks to an investment by the Bouches-du-Rhône département estimated at more than 22 million euros.
Its collections count about 40,000 objects, of which about 3,600 are shown on four levels. You discover above all objects of daily life, which show the evolution of Provence through time, with a few exceptional pieces. The route begins with ancient Arles in the courtyard, then crosses the eras, from the Provence of Mistral to more recent decades.
The museum is for all those interested in Provençal costumes, trades and traditions, as well as families, and it offers a contemporary reading of popular heritage.
