Glanum
The site of Glanum was inhabited by local peoples from the 6th century BC. Around the 2nd century BC, the town became Hellenised through contact with Greek merchants from Marseille. It was then colonised by Rome from the 1st century BC to the 3rd century AD.
The combination of water, stone and communication routes favoured the rise of a Celto-Ligurian sanctuary that was quickly Hellenised. In the Greek period, Glanum had a dual religious and commercial role, which the Roman conquest confirmed.
