Base sous-marine de Lorient

Morbihan, Bretagne

The Keroman submarine base, at Lorient, in the Morbihan, is a vast complex of blockhouses built by Germany during the Second World War to shelter the submarines operating in the Atlantic. These concrete structures, now part of the fishing port's landscape, are among the most impressive military works of the coast.

The K3 block is the most imposing of the base, with its three wet basins and four dry docks that open directly onto the roadstead, fitted with stores and workshops. Guided tours, led by guide-lecturers of the City's Heritage service, in French as well as English, let you enter one of these structures and understand its history and conversion.

Other places to visit are on the base: the Pays de Lorient submarine museum, set in the Davis tower, and the submarine Flore-S645, presented in the cell of the Keroman 2 bunker. The site interests lovers of military history and industrial heritage.
