Musée de Carnac

Morbihan, Bretagne

The James Miln – Zacharie Le Rouzic Prehistory Museum is set in Carnac, in a former presbytery in the heart of the town, at the foot of the famous megalithic alignments. It bears the name of the Scottish antiquarian James Miln, who excavated many sites around Carnac from the 1860s, and of Zacharie Le Rouzic, his assistant who became curator. The first museum opened in 1882; the institution moved into its present building in the mid-1980s.

The collections, listed as historic monuments in 1928 at Le Rouzic's request, number about 350,000 objects from some 200 archaeological sites. A selection of about 4,000 pieces is presented in the route, which retraces the evolution of man in Brittany from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages, with prehistoric and Gallo-Roman collections.

You discover notably the burials of the last hunter-gatherers found on the islands of Téviec and Hoëdic. The museum suits families, school groups and archaeology lovers.
