Vieux-château de l'ile d'Yeu
The Vieux-Château of the Île d'Yeu stands in the heart of the wild coast, on a rocky islet, at the centre of a chaotic and tormented landscape. The Île d'Yeu, in the Vendée, is one of the only three islands of the old province of Poitou, with Noirmoutier and the Île du Pilier.
Built in the fourteenth century to ensure the safety and protection of the islanders in case of foreign invasion, the castle covers three centuries of island history. Listed as a historic monument in 1890, it has been the subject of major restoration work that still continues. The site, battered by waves, is reached by the wild coast road, on foot or by bicycle, and offers a superb setting, especially in rough weather.
