Château de Talmont

Vendée, Pays de la Loire

Set on a rock and originally surrounded by water, the feudal fortress of Talmont was raised in the eleventh century by William the Bald to defend the Poitou coasts against Norman invasions. Enlarged in the fifteenth century and dismantled on Richelieu's orders, the castle has kept part of its triple enclosure and its keep with a Romanesque façade and an inner chapel. It received visits from Richard the Lionheart and several kings of France including Louis VII, Louis XI and Henry IV. Today, you can attend medieval events during the summer period.
