Château de Commequiers

Vendée, Pays de la Loire

Mentioned as early as the late 11th century, the Château de Commequiers was the seat of a powerful barony in the north-west of Bas-Poitou, which passed to the Montaigu family and then to other great families. The fortress, flanked by round towers and surrounded by wide water-filled moats, was remodelled at the end of the Middle Ages.

Later dismantled, it is now no more than a romantic ruin, overgrown with vegetation, whose gutted towers are reflected in the moats. The site, with free access, can be explored on a short walk in this small town near Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and the Vendée coast.
